Milkshakes, especially mango milkshakes, always take me back to my childhood. Summertime in Pakistan always brings the need for chilled beverages, like lassi and milkshakes, instead of a more traditional meal.

From late May to early September, mangoes are featured in many South Asian recipes. Pakistani menus include everything from mango kulfi to spicy mango salad and even mango chutney.

Why you'll love this recipe

  • The flavor & texture: This rich and creamy thirst quencher is the ultimate tropical treat with its velvety texture and vibrant golden color. The taste and texture of this mango milkshake are so delectable that it’s almost like having dessert in a glass.
  • Quick & easy recipe: A recipe that takes only four ingredients and 10 minutes to prepare is a winner in my book.
  • Great for entertaining: This simple recipe is so much fun when hosting a party. Serve it to your guests in a mason jar, a vintage bottle, mini shot glasses, or even as a float with a scoop of vanilla ice cream added to it. I love to serve shots of these along with my hashbrown breakfast casserole.

Ingredient notes

Ingredients for a mango milkshake recipe.
  • Milk: Use whole milk for a truly creamy texture in your milkshake. If you have dietary restrictions, please refer to the section below for substitutions and variations.
  • Mangoes: Use fresh or frozen mangoes based on availability and personal convenience.
  • Mango puree: I always add a South Asian brand of mango pulp to this and my mango mousse recipe for that authentic Pakistani taste. For another quick and easy fruit-based recipe, try my fruit chaat recipe.
  • Sugar: A little sugar is necessary for a perfectly balanced flavor; read the section below for substitutions.

The recipe card at the bottom of this post contains a complete list of ingredients, with measurements and instructions.

Substitutions & variations

  • Make it dairy-free: Looking for a dairy substitute? Use coconut, cashew, or almond milk to make this recipe.
  • Use a different sweetener: Add two teaspoons of honey or ¾ tablespoons of agave syrup instead of one tablespoon of sugar.
  • Make it with ice cream: Make it more indulgent and swap the milk for two scoops of regular or dairy-free vanilla ice cream.
  • Add some flavoring: Want to amp up the flavor of your milkshake? Add some flavor with ⅛ teaspoon of cardamom, ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract or rose water, or a pinch of saffron.
  • Get creative with the toppings: I like to use whipped cream, mango puree, and some ground pistachios to garnish my milkshake. Some other options are strawberry syrup, almonds, and even some desiccated coconut.

Expert Tips

  • Use whole milk: This is a must if you want a thick and smooth texture for your shake.
  • Add the correct proportion of fruit and pulp: Changing the quantities of mango cubes and pulp will change the taste and texture of this recipe.
  • Chill everything: I like chilling all my ingredients and blender jar when I make this recipe.

Recipe FAQS

What is the difference between a milkshake and a lassi?

A mango milkshake is made with milk or ice cream, while a lassi is made with a yogurt base, making it slightly tangy in flavor.

How do I store my leftovers?

A mango milkshake is best enjoyed fresh. However, if you have any leftovers, you can place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day. Any longer than that will change the texture and flavor. For this reason, I don't recommend freezing it.
